Abstract
This study examines the effect of global system of mobile communications (GSM) and artificial intelligence (AI) applications in fostering inclusive regional development. GSM networks have historically bridged communication gaps, enabling access to financial services, healthcare, and education in underserved communities. Building on this foundation, AI technologies introduce advanced capabilities such as predictive analytics, smart agriculture and mobile-based diagnostics. By integrating GSM’s widespread connectivity with AI’s transformative potential, regions can achieve more equitable growth, enhance service delivery, and strengthen governance. Case studies from Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Morocco and South Africa highlights how GSM and AI-powered applications are reshaping the healthcare delivery, agriculture, education, financial and energy sector for regional development. Some of the challenges affecting GSM-AI technology integration in Africa which were highlighted in the article include poor GSM network in rural areas, low digital skills and finance.
