Abstract

The integration of sustainable design principles in residential development has emerged as a critical necessity for achieving environmental equilibrium, social equity, and economic durability on a global scale. This paper delves into the application of sustainability principles specific to residential developments in Nigeria, emphasizing the urgent need for housing solutions that are affordable, energy-efficient, and socially inclusive. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, this study conducts a thorough literature review and evaluates various sustainability assessment frameworks. The research identifies locally sourced materials, such as stabilized earth blocks and interlocking bricks, along with the integration of renewable energy solutions particularly solar technologies as effective strategies for enhancing sustainability while reducing costs. Additionally, the study highlights the significance of bioclimatic design principles, passive solar techniques, and water conservation methods as essential tools for improving the environmental performance of residential projects. In conclusion, the research posits that sustainable residential development must extend beyond ecological considerations to encompass social and economic dimensions, thereby ensuring affordability, accessibility, and an improved quality of life for current and future generations. This study contributes valuable insights to the discourse on sustainable housing in developing nations and offers practical recommendations for architects, policymakers, and developers dedicated to advancing sustainable urban growth.
