Abstract
This research work assesses the private sector participation in solid waste management in Ojokoro, Lagos State. Lagos state is the most populous state in Nigeria, with a population recorded at 13.4 million in the year 2000 and, yet it is plagued by severe solid waste problems, with huge amounts of waste seen day in and day out on median roads, canals, water drains, and other illegal places. The Lagos state government managed its solid waste until 1997, when it formally accepted private sector participation (PSP). However, with the involvement of the PSP, the problem posed by improper management of waste has led to a situation in which most neighbourhoods and streets are littered with waste and the environment is tainted. Residents are at risk of health issues as refuse takes over the area. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed. Data was collected from 86 respondents in Ojokoro by using questionnaires and in-depth interviews with government institutions and private agencies. Study results and findings were qualitative data and were presented using descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution and percentage. Findings established that lack of sanitation enforcement, financial challenges, defective policy, shortage in machinery and equipment, and inaccessibility to places of collection and disposal are challenges of the PSP. Recommendations are made towards enforcement, inclusive and participatory policy formulation, as well as financial grants for the effective operations of the PSP.
