Abstract

This study examines the spatial patterns of urban agriculture in Ibadan, Nigeria, emphasizing its importance for food security amid rapid urbanization. Despite the critical role urban agriculture plays in enhancing local food production and livelihoods, there is a significant gap in understanding its spatial dynamics, which hampers effective land use planning. The primary aim is to assess these patterns through satellite imagery and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining spatial analysis of satellite data from 2000, 2018, and 2025 with field surveys of 145 households across five local government areas. Findings reveal a concerning decline in agricultural land from 13.96% in 2000 to 4% in 2025 due to urban expansion, while built-up areas increased significantly. The research identifies key agricultural practices, including vegetable farming (84.8%) and cassava cultivation (57.2%), which contribute to local food systems. The study concludes that urban agriculture can enhance food security and community resilience, but is threatened by urban growth. Recommendations include integrating urban agriculture into land use planning, promoting community engagement, and leveraging educational programs to foster sustainable practices.
